Industrial Ferrous Shredders: Twin-Shaft Technology
Zato twin-shaft shredders are an excellent solution for cutting and densifying both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap. As industrial ferrous shredders, they reduce material size, improve densification, and make it easier to separate the different scrap types that follow. The result is twofold: a significant reduction in volume and the ability to separate different metals using Zato’s Blue Sorter separation lines. Used as pre-shredders, they protect plant efficiency from explosions and unshreddable materials, with a considerable increase in productivity throughout the recycling line.

Why choose twin-shaft shredders
Zato industrial twin-shaft shredders are engineered to optimise the valorisation of processed materials.
Their advanced technology liberates materials effectively, enhancing recovery and reducing waste while increasing the overall value of the output. Used as pre-shredders, these twin-shaft shredders prevent explosions inside hammer mills, ensuring safe operation and lowering plant maintenance costs.
Built for robustness and reliability, the machines ensure continuous operation and consistent performance over time.
Available in two sizes and power options, you can select the model that best fits your operational requirements, and the design allows seamless integration into existing facilities without significant structural modifications.

FAQ
What is the difference between a twin-shaft shredder and a hammer mill?
A twin-shaft shredder cuts and densifies scrap at low speed with high torque, while a hammer mill crushes and liberates metals at high speed. At Zato, the two are complementary: the Blue Devil or Blue Storm twin-shaft shredder is used upstream as a pre-shredder to open bales and remove unshreddables, protecting the downstream Blue Shark hammer mill and improving the quality of the final output.
Can a twin-shaft shredder process both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap?
Yes. Zato twin-shaft shredders are designed to cut and densify both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap, from lightweight HMS2 and baled cars to aluminum profiles and harmonic cable. The differentiated shaft speeds and high-torque cutting let a single machine handle a wide mix of materials, which is why they are used both as stand-alone units and as pre-shredders ahead of separation lines.
How long does it take to install a twin-shaft shredder?
Zato twin-shaft shredders are designed for fast commissioning, typically within one week, and do not require special foundations or expensive civil works. A flat surface able to support the static load of the machine is sufficient, which keeps installation costs low and makes integration into an existing plant straightforward.
Why use a twin-shaft shredder before a hammer mill?
Using a twin-shaft shredder as a pre-shredder opens bales, neutralises gas cylinders and pressurised containers and removes non-shreddable items before they reach the mill. According to Zato, this can reduce the risk of explosions dramatically, extend the life of mill components, stabilise the feed and lower overall maintenance and operating costs.
Which twin-shaft model is right for my throughput?
Zato offers two sizes: the larger Blue Devil for bulky, heavy and mixed scrap, and the Blue Storm for lighter material at high density. The right choice depends on the type of scrap, the required throughput and the downstream process. Zato’s technical team helps select the model and can arrange an operational test with your own material on an installed machine.
